What Is a Pump Rubber Diaphragm?
A pump rubber diaphragm is a flexible elastomeric component that separates the fluid side from the mechanical side inside a pump. It transfers pressure and motion, prevents leakage, handles continuous cyclic flexing, and maintains sealing integrity — all without any direct contact between the fluid and the pump’s mechanical parts.
Fabric-reinforced pump diaphragms add one or more layers of high-strength textile inside the rubber body, dramatically improving burst pressure resistance, dimensional stability, and flex fatigue life compared to unreinforced diaphragms.
Pump diaphragms operate across industries where leak prevention, chemical compatibility, and repeatable stroke movement are non-negotiable:
| Industry | Primary Pump Type |
|---|---|
| Chemical Processing | Chemical dosing pumps, AODD pumps |
| Water Treatment | Dosing pumps, metering pumps |
| Agriculture | Sprayer pumps |
| Automotive | Fuel pumps, pneumatic pumps |
| Oil & Gas | Transfer pumps, chemical injection pumps |
| Food Processing | Dosing pumps, transfer pumps |
| Pharmaceutical | Metering pumps, dosing pumps |
| Industrial Automation | Pneumatic pumps & actuators |
| Paints & Coatings | AODD pumps |
| Fluid Handling Systems | Industrial transfer pumps |
How DS Techno Rubber Builds Pump Diaphragms
Typical Construction Layers
Every pump diaphragm we produce follows a precision multi-layer construction designed for long flex fatigue life and dimensional control:
Top rubber layer — fluid-contact face, compound selected for media compatibility
Reinforcement fabric layer — bonded under heat and pressure for structural integrity
Bottom rubber layer — mechanical-side face, completes the sandwich construction
Optional metal insert — provides fastening points or load-bearing support

Pump Diaphragm Applications

AODD pumps cycle at high frequency — often millions of strokes per year — making flex fatigue life the critical design parameter. We engineer AODD diaphragms with multi-layer Nylon or Polyester reinforcement and FKM, EPDM, or Neoprene rubber compounds to handle aggressive chemical transfer and solvent-heavy fluids. Leak-proof sealing and dimensional stability ensure every stroke delivers the same displacement.

Fuel pump diaphragms operate in continuous contact with petrol, diesel, kerosene, and hydrocarbon blends — media that rapidly degrade standard rubber compounds. We manufacture NBR (Nitrile) diaphragms with excellent fuel resistance, dimensional stability under pressure pulsation, and long-cycle durability for both automotive and industrial fuel systems.

Sprayer pumps handle chemical herbicide and pesticide solutions in outdoor field conditions — requiring diaphragms that resist chemical attack, UV degradation, and wide temperature swings. Our NBR and EPDM reinforced diaphragms deliver reliable sealing and flex life through full spraying seasons.

Air-operated pneumatic pumps and vacuum systems rely on diaphragms for precise pressure and vacuum control. Our fabric-reinforced molded diaphragms provide the structural integrity needed for repeated pressure differentials while maintaining elastic recovery and sealing performance in both positive-pressure and negative-pressure cycles.

Water and wastewater treatment systems demand diaphragms that resist ozone, chlorine, water, and common treatment chemicals. EPDM reinforced diaphragms are our standard recommendation for this sector — providing excellent chemical compatibility, long outdoor service life, and consistent metering accuracy.

Key Properties of DS Techno Pump Diaphragms
Long Flex Fatigue Life
High Pressure Capability
Fabric reinforcement allows our diaphragms to withstand pressures up to 2000 psi (136 bar), with differential pressure management from both sides. We engineer burst strength margins into every design to keep your pump running safely under peak load.
Leak-Proof Sealing Performance
Excellent Dimensional Stability
Chemical & Fuel Resistance
We match the rubber compound to your process fluid — NBR for oils and fuels, EPDM for water and ozone, FKM for aggressive chemicals and solvents, Silicone for high-temperature or food-grade media. The right compound prevents swelling, hardening, and chemical degradation.
Metal Insert Availability
For applications requiring structural fastening, load transfer, or specialized mounting, we manufacture pump diaphragms with bonded metal inserts. The insert is fully encapsulated to prevent corrosion exposure and maintain sealing integrity.

FAQ
FKM (Viton) and PTFE-faced diaphragms are the standard choice for chemical pump applications because of their outstanding resistance to aggressive solvents, acids, and corrosive process fluids. For general water-based chemical systems, EPDM is commonly used.
Reinforced rubber diaphragms are commonly used in AODD (air-operated double diaphragm) pumps, dosing pumps, metering pumps, fuel pumps, chemical transfer pumps, agricultural sprayer pumps, pneumatic pumps, and vacuum pumps.
Pump diaphragms are reinforced with Nylon (high flex fatigue resistance), Polyester (dimensional stability), Aramid / Kevlar (high burst strength), Cotton (economical option), and Nomex (high temperature performance). The selection depends on operating pressure, temperature, and required flex life.
