What Are Fire Resistant Diaphragms?

A fire resistant diaphragm is a specially engineered flexible membrane designed to maintain its structural integrity, sealing performance, and functional reliability when exposed to high heat, open flame, or extreme thermal stress. A fire resistant diaphragm is specifically engineered to resist ignition, limit flame spread, and maintain functional integrity during fire exposure. This goes beyond simple heat resistance — the materials used either self-extinguish or char rather than melt, preventing flame propagation. Fire resistant diaphragms are also tested and certified to recognised fire standards such as UL 94, NFPA, and API fire test protocols.

The most commonly specified elastomers are silicone (for broad thermal range and inherent flame resistance), Neoprene (for reliable flame retardancy and chemical resistance), and FKM/Viton® with fire-resistant additives for the most demanding chemical and thermal environments. Material selection is always driven by the specific operating conditions and certification requirements of the application.
Fabrics that melt under flame exposure can drip burning material, spread fire, and lose their structural integrity almost instantly. Fabrics that char — such as Nomex and Kevlar aramid — retain a degree of dimensional stability and form a protective carbonised layer that limits further flame penetration.
